Optimizing Preventive Strategies and Malaria Diagnostics to Reduce the Impact of Malaria on US Military Forces

This two-day invitation-only working group forum brought together a small group of key DoD stakeholders to clarify issues regarding primaquine terminal chemoprophylaxis, assess operational challenges in malaria diagnostics, identify potential solutions to optimize malaria diagnostic modalities and to continue collaborations for development of clinical decision support tools and inventory of DoD resources.

Prevention, Policies and Priorities to Reduce the Impact of Malaria on US Military Forces

This two-day invitation-only meeting brought together key DoD stakeholders to include CCMDs, services' headquarters and public health hubs, and the pest management, infectious disease, training and research communities. This working group forum addressed gaps in surveillance, prevention and treatment programs; elucidated malaria-specific CCMD requirements; reached consensus and formulated the steps ahead in addressing chemoprophylaxis policy issues, improving compliance with personal protective measures, and collaborating to archive and produce clinical decision support tools.

March 2011 - Armed Forces Public Health Conference  (Hampton, VA)
Controversies and Challenges in U.S. Military Public Health Surveillance

Held as a session within the Preventive Medicine track of the 2011 Armed Forces Public Health Conference, this curriculum addressed some of the challenges associated with military public health surveillance in the deployed, overseas, regional and joint base settings. It also focused on some of the controversies associated with distinguishing public health practice from research and the limitations associated with administrative data sources.

Controlling an Influenza Epidemic Before or Without Vaccine: Military Lessons Learned from nH1N1

Held concurrent with the 2010 Annual Force Health Protection Conference, the goal of this one-day workshop was to equip the U.S. military stakeholders to effectively respond to an influenza pandemic emphasizing the use of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) such as screening, isolation and quarantine, social distancing, school closures, risk communication, and personal protection (face masks and hand hygiene).

Malaria Surveillance and Epidemiology: Reducing the Impact on US Civilians and Military Forces

This one-day invitation-only forum co-sponsored by the CDC and AFHSC addressed current malaria surveillance methods, epidemiological trends, and challenges facing the U.S. Government and international organizations as they manage their populations at risk of malaria. Focusing on gaps in surveillance, diagnosis and interagency data sharing, it identified collaborative solutions to common challenges in malaria surveillance.

Assessing Potentially Hazardous Environmental Exposures among Military Populations

This three-day educational symposium co-sponsored by USU and AFHSC addressed historical exposure events as they relate to expected exposures (e.g., herbicide in Vietnam), unexpected exposures (e.g., Gulf War oil well fires), and the framework of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) strategies developed for addressing environmental exposures and their possible impact on military populations.

Identifying the Unmet Health Surveillance Needs of Recruits

This one-day interactive roundtable for decision-makers, examined current health surveillance efforts among recruits during initial entry training and identified gaps in such surveillance, particularly in the areas of injury and respiratory disease surveillance.

August 2009 - 3rd Annual Pandemic Influenza Workshop and Tabletop Exercise  (Albuquerque, NM)
US Military's Management of Pandemic Influenza A (H1N1) and Beyond

This one-day workshop and tabletop exercise presented at the 2009 Annual Force Health Protection conference, addressed the appropriate public health management of contagious individuals and their contacts, and the transportation of potentially contagious persons in the context of an influenza pandemic. This workshop on influenza preparedness also generated two publications:
